Beyond Martyn's Law: the Level 3 award building protective-security competence
Ops Con Intelligence

As Martyn's Law readiness climbs the agenda, the question for a lot of organisations is not only what the law requires but whether their people actually have the knowledge to act on it. The Level 3 Award in Counter-Terrorism Protective Security and Preparedness, known as CTPSaP, is one answer. It is administered by SFJ Awards, with the National Counter Terrorism Security Office among the bodies that have contributed to it, and it is aimed at building knowledge, capability and confidence in counter-terrorism preparedness.

The value of a qualification like this is that it moves an organisation past awareness and toward competence. Martyn's Law will require premises to have credible public protection procedures in place, and those procedures are only as good as the people expected to run them under pressure. A structured award gives teams a common baseline, a shared vocabulary, and evidence of capability that stands up to scrutiny.

For The Ops Con and the operators it works with, the point is straightforward. Protective security is becoming a regulated, documented discipline rather than an informal one. Formal training is one of the cleaner ways to show a venue, a client or a future regulator that the capability is real.
