Why Train With The Ops Con

Operator Instruction β€” Not Retired Background

Our lead instructor, Lee Brett, is a former Tier 1 American Special Forces operator and Medical Sergeant who continues to deploy on live close-protection assignments globally. You learn what the work is actually like from someone still doing it.

Every cohort is co-delivered by a UK Army Veteran with 15+ years of specialist CP experience.

Battersea Power Station HQ

Our training headquarters is inside Battersea Power Station β€” central London, on the Northern line, surrounded by live operating environments (restaurants, retail, transport, residential, event venues). You train where CP work happens.

The Engine Room, 18 The Power Station, Battersea, London SW11 8BZ.

Six-Student Cohorts

Most London providers run cohorts of 12–24. We cap at six. You will be observed individually, corrected individually, and walk away with a realistic picture of your own standard. No hiding in the back of the room.

Partner Network From Day One

Graduates plug straight into The Ops Con's partner network β€” Ronin SA, 242 Group Advanced Driving, Belgraves of London chauffeuring, S2K surveillance, and others. Real introductions to real work.

10% of every course fee is donated to the Afghanistan Veterans Community.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the SIA Close Protection course take?

+
Our selective Level 3 Close Protection Programme runs for 21 training days at Battersea Power Station, covering the full SIA-mandated syllabus plus First Aid at Work. Shorter options exist (one-day Familiarisation, skills top-up courses) but a full Level 3 qualification requires the 21-day programme.

How much does close protection training cost in London?

+
The Ops Con Close Protection Programme is Β£2,999 for standard entry or Β£2,499 for active Ops Con members. This includes the Level 3 Close Protection qualification and First Aid at Work certification β€” no hidden add-ons. For a no-commitment introduction, the one-day London Close Protection Skills and Familiarisation Day is Β£199 (Β£149 for members).

What qualifications do I need to become a Close Protection Officer in the UK?

+
To work legally as a Close Protection Officer in the UK you need an SIA-recognised Level 3 Close Protection qualification plus a valid First Aid at Work certificate to apply for the SIA Close Protection Licence. Our programme delivers both in-house, so you leave ready to apply.

What's the difference between a Level 3 Close Protection course and a refresher?

+
The Level 3 course is the initial qualification you need to first apply for your SIA CP licence. A CP refresher (top-up) course is a shorter qualification taken before your existing SIA licence expires, usually 3 years after the initial award. If you've never held a CP licence, you need the full Level 3 programme.

How much do Close Protection Officers earn in London?

+
Entry-level CPOs in London typically earn Β£200–£350 per day on assignment. Experienced operators with UHNW/celebrity/government clients earn Β£400–£800+ per day. Career-long earnings reflect reputation, network, and specialist skills (advanced driving, medical, international experience). Our programme places students inside an existing network of operators and clients.

Do I need a military background to take this course?

+
No. Our cohort includes ex-military, ex-law-enforcement, career-changers, and security professionals. What you need is an active mind, reasonable fitness, the right to work in the UK, and an age of 18+. Entry is by application and interview so we can ensure every cohort is well-matched.

What makes your course different from other London providers?

+
Three things. (1) Our lead instructor is ex-Tier 1 American Special Forces who is still operational β€” not retired. (2) We cap cohorts at six places, not twenty, so you get direct individual attention and operator-level scrutiny. (3) Our venue is Battersea Power Station, central London β€” not a community centre on the outskirts. You train where the work is.

What happens on the final assessment?

+
You'll complete a scenario-based deployment exercise in a real central-London environment. You'll be assessed on route planning, threat identification, formation, venue reconnaissance, communications discipline, and decision-making under pressure β€” not just knowledge recall. Written assessments are completed in parallel during the programme.

Can I try a close protection course before committing to 21 days?

+
Yes β€” this is exactly what the one-day London Close Protection Skills and Familiarisation Day exists for. It's Β£199 (members Β£149), based at our Battersea HQ, and gives you a realistic feel for the work under the same instructors who teach the full programme. Most students who do the one-day and go on to apply for the 21-day programme tell us the Familiarisation Day was the deciding factor.

What happens after I complete the course?

+
You'll leave with your Level 3 Close Protection qualification and First Aid at Work certification β€” enough to apply for your SIA Close Protection Licence. From there, our graduates plug into our partner network (Ronin SA, 242 Group, Belgraves of London and others) and the wider Ops Con community for introductions, ongoing development, and paid work opportunities.
