Living the Mission: Scott Cox's Journey – Week Three – Precision Under Pressure

14 Mar 2025
The Ops Con Team

After two intense weeks of training, Scott and his fellow trainees were beginning to see the pieces of the puzzle come together. The foundation had been laid, the principles drilled into them, and now it was time to push their skills even further. Week Three introduced advanced driving techniques, convoy operations, and the legal frameworks that govern close protection work.

This week was about refining precision under pressure. Every drill, every maneuver, and every decision had to be executed with absolute control. The instructors were not just looking for competence, they were looking for operators who could perform flawlessly in high-stress, high-stakes environments.

Days 11-12: Conflict Management and Route Planning

Week Three began with a continued focus on conflict management, reinforcing the principles of de-escalation and threat assessment. Scott and his team also delved into Personnel Escort Section Driving theory, learning the intricacies of GPS systems, route planning, and contingency strategies.

In close protection, routes are never arbitrary. Every journey must be planned with precision, accounting for potential threats, traffic patterns, and alternative escape routes. The ability to navigate efficiently while maintaining security awareness is a critical skill for any operator.

Convoy Driving Training

Days 13-14: Unarmed Combat and Convoy Driving

Days 13 and 14 saw the team refining their unarmed combat techniques, building on the foundations laid in previous weeks. Precision, control, and the ability to neutralize threats without excessive force were emphasized at every turn.

The team then moved into convoy driving and Embus/Debus drills. These exercises taught them how to coordinate multi-vehicle movements, execute seamless vehicle transitions, and maintain security during embarkation and disembarkation. Teamwork and communication were paramount.

Day 15: Skid Pan Training

Day 15 brought one of the most anticipated sessions of the week: skid pan training. This exercise tested the team's ability to control vehicles under extreme conditions, navigating wet and slippery surfaces with precision and composure.

Skid pan training is not just about handling a car in challenging conditions, it is about understanding vehicle dynamics, maintaining control under stress, and executing evasive maneuvers when necessary. For close protection operators, this skill can mean the difference between safety and disaster.

Raceway Training

Day 16: Raceway and Driving Assessments

Day 16 took the training to the raceway, where Scott and his team were tested on high-speed driving, evasive maneuvers, and reaction-based scenarios. This was not about speed for its own sake, it was about precision, control, and decision-making under pressure.

The driving assessments pushed every trainee to their limits, demanding absolute focus and flawless execution. Every mistake was noted, every success reinforced the importance of preparation and discipline.

Raceway Assessment

Day 17: Convoy Driving Assessments and Legal Frameworks

The week concluded with convoy driving assessments, where the team had to demonstrate their ability to coordinate multi-vehicle operations under pressure. Communication, timing, and tactical awareness were critical to success.

Following the assessments, the team returned to legal frameworks for bodyguards, reinforcing the importance of operating within legal boundaries while maintaining the highest standards of professional protection.

By the end of Week Three, Scott had proven that he could perform under pressure, adapt to new challenges, and execute complex operations with precision. But with two weeks remaining, the real test was still ahead.
