The Foreign Office has warned that protests are planned in Kinshasa on 15 September 2026, in its travel advice for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Demonstrations in the capital can draw a heavy security response and turn disorderly with little warning, so today is a day for extra caution on any movement through the city.
The wider advisory geography is severe. The Foreign Office advises against all travel to a large part of the country: the eastern provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu, Ituri, Haut-Uele, Maniema, Tanganyika and Haut-Lomami, the entire DRC to South Sudan border, the Kwamouth territory of Mai-Ndombe Province, and anywhere within 50km of the border with the Central African Republic. It advises against all but essential travel to the N'djili and Kimbanseke districts of Kinshasa south of the main access road to N'djili airport, the N1 road between and including Menkao to the west and Kenge to the east, Bangoka International Airport at Kisangani because of drone attacks, and Upemba National Park.
For operators: central Kinshasa sits outside the all-travel zones apart from those two southern districts and the airport corridor, so a city move is possible but demands live situational awareness on a protest day. Build crowd avoidance and alternate routing into any journey, keep principals clear of gatherings and the policing around them, and treat the east of the country as a do-not-travel environment. Work to the current Foreign Office position rather than a brief written weeks earlier.
