The FCDO's Western Sahara travel advice, current as of 29 June 2026, keeps two areas under an advise-against-all-travel warning: the zone within 40km north and west of the Berm boundary line, including the city of Es Semara, and the territory south and east of the Berm.
The driver is the militarised line between Moroccan-controlled territory and Polisario Front-held areas. The FCDO states that cross-border rocket fire has occurred and cannot be ruled out in future.
Operator implication: this is a live conflict boundary, not a bureaucratic caution. Movements, recces or client travel near the Berm carry a real indirect-fire risk and severely limited consular support. The FCDO also warns that travel insurance is invalidated by travelling against its advice, which extends to security personnel and contractors operating in these zones. Route planning for southern Morocco and the wider region should treat the 40km strip and the Berm line as hard boundaries and build contingency accordingly.
