The UN Interim Force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, is in its final mandate. On 28 August 2025 the Security Council adopted resolution 2790 at its 9989th meeting, renewing the force for the last time until 31 December 2026 and calling for an orderly and safe drawdown and withdrawal from that date and within one year, completing by the end of 2027. The resolution breaks with the mission's usual annual renewals by setting a fixed exit date. The Council also asked the Secretary-General to explore, by 1 June 2026, options for the future of resolution 1701 after UNIFIL leaves, including assistance with security and monitoring of the Blue Line, the line that separates Lebanon and Israel.
The picture on the ground has not settled. The Foreign Office advises against all travel to parts of Lebanon, including the South and Nabatiyeh Governorates, and against all but essential travel to other specified areas. It reports that Israeli airstrikes have occurred primarily in the South, Nabatiyeh and Beqaa Governorates and Beirut's southern suburbs, and that an Israeli military presence remains in the south.
For operators: south Lebanon stays a do-not-travel environment, and the timeline is the part to watch. As UNIFIL draws down through 2026 and 2027, the monitoring and de-escalation buffer along the Blue Line thins, which raises the risk of miscalculation and rapid escalation in the border area. Any lawful movement, contingency planning or duty-of-care assessment tied to Lebanon should track the drawdown and the Secretary-General's Blue Line options, and work to the live Foreign Office position rather than a brief written weeks earlier.
