Saudi Arabia

The FCDO now advises against all but essential travel to Jeddah and Dammam and to all airports in Saudi Arabia except Medina International Airport, its change note of 11 October says. It follows a Houthi missile attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on 10 October that, according to UN News, Saudi authorities say killed 12 people and wounded more than 300. "These attacks must cease immediately," the UN Secretary-General said. The FCDO suggests British nationals consider leaving by land via Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE or Jordan. Full story in today's lead.

India

The UN human rights office has raised concern over reports of mass detentions of demonstrators, protest leaders, lawyers and journalists around a large election-reform protest in Delhi on 10 October, UN News reports. Heavy security and road closures were reported. The FCDO warns that protest risks are higher during elections. Full story in today's second post.

Syria

The UN human rights office said on 9 October that Israeli military incursions into southern Syria are intensifying, with some 280 incidents recorded in September, the highest monthly figure this year, according to UN News. Reported incidents include raids on homes, restrictions on movement and arbitrary detention. OHCHR says 49 Syrians are believed to remain in Israeli custody, a figure not independently verified. The FCDO advises against all travel to Syria.

Djibouti

A boat carrying 305 people from Djibouti towards Yemen sank near Guehere, north of Obock, in the early hours of Friday 9 October. UN News reports at least 139 dead and 84 still missing, with about 82 survivors. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) described it as one of the deadliest shipwrecks recorded on the Eastern Route from the Horn of Africa to the Arabian Peninsula.
