The Brief โ€” Saturday 25 July 2026

**Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb.** Brent closed above $100 on 24 July, up 6.96 percent to $100.65, the first time above that mark since late May. Two Saudi tankers were attacked on Thursday, one confirmed ablaze. The operator-relevant detail is not the price but the pattern: open-source analysis indicates enforcement is being calibrated by ownership, flag and crew nationality rather than by cargo. Chinese-owned tonnage has been passing; Western and Saudi-linked operators have faced restriction. If you carry a corridor exposure, affiliation now belongs in the risk assessment alongside route and cargo.

**UK regulation.** The SIA's qualification review reaches its publication milestone this summer, with new qualifications mandatory from spring 2027. Close protection content is explicitly named in scope. Nothing has changed yet, and secondary commentary is running ahead of the regulator's own material on specifics such as first aid prerequisites. Wait for the specifications before committing training spend.

**A note on this edition.** It is short, and deliberately so. The desk did not publish on 24 July and this edition covers 25 July only. We do not backdate an intelligence feed to fill a gap: a briefing carries a date because the date is part of the claim. Two items cleared verification today and are published; items that did not clear it are not here. A thin edition is the honest outcome of a strict sourcing gate, and it is the version we would rather put in front of you.
