Sunday 16 August 2026. A quieter weekend picture, with the standing postures doing the talking rather than fresh incidents.
Middle East. The FCDO holds an advise-against-all-travel line for the whole of Syria, reviewed on 22 July, with wider regional tensions still live after Iranian strikes across the region since 8 July. Iraq's advice, refreshed on the same date, keeps a layered map: advise-against-all-travel for named northern and border areas, and advise-against-all-but-essential across much of the rest, including the Kurdistan Region, with a standing warning on further strikes and possible airspace closures. Syria's transition is moving at the institutional level, but the security environment, from Sweida in the south to the ripple risk of regional escalation, has not caught up.
United Kingdom. The national terrorism threat level stays at SEVERE, an attack highly likely, where it has sat since 30 April. Northern Ireland-related terrorism in Northern Ireland is assessed at SUBSTANTIAL. For protective teams the useful posture this weekend is the ordinary one under SEVERE: visible, proportionate measures at crowded places and events, and current counter-terrorism awareness.
Nothing in today's picture calls for a change of plan on its own. The value is in reading the standing map correctly and keeping movements conservative where the advice is strongest.
