Ukraine
Air raid alerts in Kyiv ran for 33 hours in one 48-hour period in the days before 2 October, the UN human rights chief said on 2 October, as the UN, citing local authorities, reported a dozen civilians killed and nearly 80 injured in a new wave of attacks. The FCDO updated its Ukraine advice the same day and says events attended by the Ukrainian government and military are more likely to be targeted. Full story in today's lead.
Employment law
Since 1 October, staff have six months rather than three to bring most employment tribunal claims, and from 30 October employers can be liable for harassment of their staff by third parties such as members of the public unless they have taken all reasonable steps to prevent it. Haiti
Gangs have kidnapped more than 230 people, and at least 5,700 people have been confirmed killed or injured by gangs or during operations against them since 1 January, according to the UN human rights office (OHCHR), as reported by UN News on 2 October.
Afghanistan
The UN mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) confirmed that at least 10 civilians, most of them children, were killed and nine injured in air strikes in Kunar and Helmand provinces on 1 October, the UN said that day. The mission has documented more than 1,100 civilian deaths and injuries from cross-border armed violence in Afghanistan so far in 2026. The UN did not say who carried out the strikes.
Brazil and Peru
Brazil holds the first round of its general election today, with a second round scheduled for Sunday 25 October, and Peru holds local elections today. The FCDO advises avoiding rallies, protests and demonstrations in Brazil, and says increased numbers of people are expected around polling stations and electoral institutions in Peru today and in the days after.
