Two items for the desk today.
Venezuela. The FCDO updated its advice on 2 September to note limited commercial flights resuming from Caracas's Maiquetia airport from 1 September, but the risk picture is unchanged. The FCDO advises against all travel to the country's border areas, the Orinoco Mining Arc of Bolivar state, Delta Amacuro and Zulia, and against all but essential travel to the rest of Venezuela. The line to carry is on detention: the advisory says foreign nationals, including Europeans, have been detained and accused of terrorism, and that embassies have in some cases been unable to support them. Reopening air access does not change the detention risk on the ground.
Guinea-Bissau. At the UN on 1 September, the Secretary-General took note of a constitutional referendum held on 30 August and called for a peaceful, time-bound transition to constitutional order ahead of general elections on 6 December, welcoming ECOWAS and African Union mediation. The FCDO, last reviewing its advice in December 2025, already flags political instability and tells travellers to avoid demonstrations. The run-up to the December vote is the risk window for anyone operating in Bissau.
