Sudan and Abyei

The UN said on 20 October that at least 28 civilians were killed in drone attacks in Abyei on 19 October, at Amiet Market and Todach. The same briefing also listed reported drone strikes in West Kordofan, Khartoum, Nyala and White Nile State. The FCDO advises against all travel to Sudan. Full story in today's lead.

Tanzania

On 20 October the FCDO updated its Tanzania advice. Its change note covers Ebola screening measures for travellers arriving in Tanzania, the risk of protests on 29 October, and the risks of bringing cannabidiol (CBD) products into the country. The Safety and security page refers to calls on social media for demonstrations on public holidays and on the one-year anniversary of the 29 October 2025 election, and says: "Further demonstrations, including violent responses by security forces, are possible at any time." Separately, the Warnings and insurance page says the FCDO advises against all but essential travel within 20km of the border with Cabo Delgado province in Mozambique.

Central African Republic

The UN's senior official in Bangui told the Security Council on 20 October that security threats persist, particularly in areas bordering Chad and Sudan. She welcomed the release on 19 October of hostages held by the armed group AAKG, taken in an attack in 2025 in Bambouti, in an operation led by the UN mission. The mission's mandate is due for renewal on 15 November.

Yemen

The UN spokesperson said on 20 October that road closures and insecurity are preventing vital supplies, including fuel, from entering Taiz and the surrounding areas. The UN called on the Houthi de facto authorities to ensure safe passage. UNHCR says displacement in Yemen reached more than a quarter of a million people as of 17 October, up from close to 213,000 previously reported.

Regulation

The SIA published "SIA enforcement: what to expect" on 20 October, setting out its enforcement powers, the rights of people under investigation and the appeal deadlines. Full story in today's regulation piece.
