Kenya
Kenya has confirmed its first imported case of Bundibugyo virus disease, a form of Ebola. WHO says the patient, a Kenyan citizen living in the DRC, travelled by road through Beni to Kampala and flew to Nairobi, arriving on 3 October, and died on the night of 5 October. 28 contacts are listed and 23 passengers and four crew from the same flight are being traced. There is no approved vaccine or specific treatment. Full story in today's lead.
Ethiopia
The UN said on 6 October that "continued hostilities are displacing people across central, north-western, and eastern Tigray; although, verified figures remain unavailable." In Amhara, a Government-led effort to help people displaced by recent insecurity return from the town of Kobo to their areas of origin "was suspended following a deterioration of the security situation there."
Saudi Arabia
The FCDO updated the regional tensions information on its Saudi Arabia Warnings and insurance page on 6 October. The page says: "There is a heightened threat against airports, military bases, ports and energy infrastructure across Saudi Arabia, including Abha, Jizan, Najran, Riyadh, Jeddah and Yanbu, as well as shipping in the Red Sea." The FCDO's change note describes this as updated information and records no change to the areas it advises against travel to.
United Kingdom
In a statement for the anniversary of the 7 October attacks, the Prime Minister said: "A year ago we witnessed a horrifying terrorist attack on the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Manchester, with further attacks against Jewish people and institutions since." The statement says the government is funding protection for synagogues, schools and community buildings. The UK national threat level remains severe. Teams covering community events today should plan on that basis.
