The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all travel to the whole of Mali. The current advisory, last updated on 10 July 2026, points to terrorist attacks, kidnapping and route blockades across the country.
The armed group Jama'a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin, JNIM, has imposed blockades on key routes throughout southern and western Mali, including approaches to the capital, Bamako. Fuel convoys have been attacked since September 2025, and the FCDO records coordinated attacks in April and July 2026, the July wave targeting military installations. Roads outside Bamako are described as often damaged and dangerous, and groups operating in central and northern Mali use landmines.
The kidnapping picture is the sharper concern for anyone moving personnel or clients through the region. The FCDO assesses a very high threat of kidnapping by al-Qaeda and Islamic State aligned groups, and it names British nationals as legitimate targets, including tourists, humanitarian aid workers, journalists and business travellers. Abductions rose in southern and western Mali through 2025, and kidnappers operate in urban areas, including Bamako itself.
Operator implication: treat the whole country as a no-go for routine tasking. For clients with unavoidable exposure, the planning baseline is journey management built around the blockade risk, hard limits on road movement outside Bamako, confirmed medical and extraction arrangements, and a kidnap-for-ransom contingency covering proof of life and a response retainer. Duty-of-care sign-off should reflect the advise-against-all-travel position, which carries direct insurance and liability weight.
